Case #06313991 - Vmware issue when veeam backup job starts.

Post by Ultra_VM »

I have an intermittent issue when doing VEEAM vmware backups.

I have B&R connected to a 2 host vcenter with nimble storage and the backup job is twice daily incrementals with full Wed and Sat night.
Was working fine but then started getting intermittent VM retries which passed first time after 10 minutes (1 every other week).

Then other issues started happening.
I sent logs to Veeam but it didnt lead to much.

Last night I set a ping to a few devices to see if there was an issue there.
The backup starts at 1am and nearly on the second the vcenter ping went request timed out for nearly 5 minutes.
No other VM or component timed out.
So looks like veeam starting the backup sometimes triggers something on vCenter that shows it as offline. Like over utilisation.

Here is what the backup job said.
01:00:18 Building list of machines to process 03:20
27/10/2023 01:03:39 Host xxxx-VC-01 is not available. Error: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond
27/10/2023 01:03:39 :: Cluster xxxx-xxx-Cluster-01 is unavailable, VMs residing on it will be skipped from processing.
27/10/2023 01:03:39 :: Virtual Machine vCLS (2) is unavailable and will be skipped from processing.

Then on the retry 10 minutes later it all works fine.
Nothing obvious showing on the vcenter events or nothing.

Anyone seen anything like this before.
Assuming its vmware issue but when does it trigger when veeam backup starts only and even then not all the time.

Is the vCenter server in the job?
Sounds like snapshot stun taking place. If it is in the job and processing that VM do you get the same behaviour e.g. ping times out when taking a manual snapshot?

Thanks for the reply but would that not happen all the time.
Also would it not take time to build the list of machines, enable block tracking assign backup infra before the vcentre would even start creating snapshots.
Also the snapshots are taken from storage so all cpu etc would be there not VC ?
