Changed Block Tracking and Snapshots

Post by mx_michael.preis »

Hi,

I backed up a server with 12 Snapshots (not the best practive, i know) and 220 GB of data. The included hard disk has 50 GB. After processing the backup it has a "Total size" of 50 GB and a "Backup size" of 35,8 GB due to deduplication. But it was consisting a warning "Changed block tracking cannot be enabled: one or more snapshots present.". When I do an instant recovery of the server, there is no snapshot existing. So what exactly does it backed up? Only the initial server?

Regards, Michael

Hi Michael,

Snapshots cannot be backed up through vStorage API. All your snapshot data was consolidated into the parent virtual disks, so the VM image you have in the backup files is the most recent/current state with all the changes from the snapshots merged.

Thanks!
