Compact and schedule

Post by sweepsd »

Hi

I have amended a backup job to compact the full backup files weekly on a Thursday. This worked fine the first time but doesn't seem to run weekly on Thursday, I added the compact element on 25 April (thurs) and the next time it ran was 15 May (weds) which is about 3 weeks later. Anyone else seen this?

Thanks

Any chance the job didn't even start on missed Thursdays? You can check in history.

Turned out to be bug and will be officially fixed in future Veeam releases

Can you provide us with the case Id, so that we can double check it internally? Thanks.

I think I stumbled upon the same bug, compacts just not happening (set to daily for testing) - 9.5U4b.

Support confirmed that the issue is real and there's a workaround, waiting for it.
Strangely, compact triggered once for me after installing updates and restarting, however it didn't with other restarts.

Thanks for the update. Seems the issue has intermittent nature or shows up under a set of conditions. Let's see if the mentioned workaround helps.

I'll see in a few hours if it works but workaround (support said it's OK to share):
This one is the known issue which is going to be fixed in later versions. Hopefully soon.

As an example, if you have 14 points in a job, then this job is going to run compact once in 2 weeks.
Workaround is to create following registry entry on Veeam server:
Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication
Name: CompactSkipModificationTimeCheck
Type: DWORD
Value: 1
The entry forces Veeam to skip comparing modification_time with last_compact_time.

I recommend you restarting VeeamBackupService to pick up changes. Make sure none of the jobs are in progress, please.
