Direct SAN Proxy
Hi All
I have this scenario:
* An ESXI Host using a shared VMFS datastore in a SAN Storage
* A physical Backup Proxy connected to SAN network, using Direct SAN Access Transport Mode
* A physical Windows Server with local disks attached, connected to SAN network, and configured as a Backup Repository.
1 - With this configuration, backup data will be retrieved by the proxy from VMFS Datastore and sent to Windows Backup Repository using SAN network? Or proxy will send this data to Backup Repository using LAN network? If not, how this backup data will be retrieved and transported?
2 - May I attach local disks in Proxy and use them as Backup Repository too?
Best Regards.

Re: Direct SAN Proxy
Hello Valter,
1. Transport mode (in your case Direct SAN) is a method used by Veeam Data Mover to read data from VMFS datastore during backup or to write data to the datastore during restore, it does nothing with data transport from proxy to the repository. If you want to route backup traffic going from proxy to the repository over the dedicated network, please take a look at preferred network setting.
2. Yes, you can, just create a new repository on the same server and point backup job to it. I'd even expect a faster backup with all-in-one setup as Data Movers will be running within the same server, therefore data transmission between them will be faster than over a network channel.
Thanks!

Re: Direct SAN Proxy
Hi PetrM. Thank you for your answer.
1 - So, if I'm not configure a preferred network, where will the traffic be sent to Backup Repository?
2 - Great. I'll try this configuration here.
Kind Regards.

1. IP addresses used when adding proxy and repository servers to Veeam B&R will be used.

Re: Direct SAN Proxy
Hi All.
Which transport mode will be used when I'm using a VVOL datastore? Storage used to manage VVOL datastore is accessed by ESXi using FC/FCoE or iSCSI connection, so I think it could be Direct SAN, but I'd like to confirm.
Best Regards.

Re: Direct SAN Proxy
Hi Valter, direct SAN is not supported for VVol (VMware limitation), so it will be either hotadd or nbd.
