DR location for VBR

Post by stre1026 »

Hello,

We had a hurricane the other day which is making me question our current backup strategy. We have a headquarters building and a DR location at a colo. The main VBR server is at the headquarters and we backup VMs to a NAS at headquarters and use backup copy jobs to copy those backups to another NAS at the colo. In addition, we replicate VMs from the headquarters to the DR location. I was reading that best practice is to run the VBR server at the DR location in order to be able to use the failover functionality. I don't mind moving my VBR server to the colo, but what's the best method to do so? I already have VBR proxies at the colo. I also want to make sure that I can still use the Nimble storage integration and direct SAN backup with proxies at the headquarters. I also still want to backup to the NAS at headquarters so regular backups aren't traversing the WAN. Can proxies do all that work and have the VBR server at the colo control it all? Is it just a matter of restoring my configuration to a server at the colo and then removing it from headquarters? Will I have to reinstall proxies, etc?

Hello,
If your backup server is a VM, then I would probably just move it. Otherwise I would use configuration restore on a fresh machine

The proxy role and the NAS gateway server must stay at headquarter to ensure traffic stays on-site. Depending on how your setup is, you need to re-add the proxies & repositories, yes (just a few clicks, nothing special). Ensure that rescan works everywhere. If something is missing, the software will tell it.

Best regards,
Hannes
