Hi All,

I am wondering what the best disaster recovery process would be in case of host failure. Any help would be appreciated.
example scenario:
Host has a motherboard issue and waiting on replacement part

Environment:
Proliant DL360 running esxi
2 x Windows VM's

DR PC - Windows 10 I7 3.6GHz 64Gb RAM with Veeam Backup and Replication 12
C: 1.81Tb Free
E: SSD 238Gb Free
F: 1.8Tb free (This is the backup Repository)
I: 6.2Tb free USB copy Drive

VMWARE Backup of 2 Server VMS from an ESXI host (Remote Desktop Server and AD Server)
Backup to internal Sata Drive F:
Two secondary Targets:
Backup Copy to USB Drive I:
Backup copy to Offsite

Spare equipment:
I have an old Proliant DL380 server whuch isn't being used and has Windows Server 2012 Xeon 2.2 128Gb RAM
C: 1.4Tb Free
D: 1.63Tb Free
E: 820Gb Free

What are my available options in having the VM's up and running on alternative hardware?
Also, once ESXI host hardware is repaired, what would the restore process be?

Hi Eplit

You can restore those VMs to a new ESXI Host. The procedure would look like:
1. Deploy a new ESXI Host
2. Start a VM restore:
- Option 1: Instant recovery --> https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
- Option 2: Entire VM Restore --> https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
3. Repair your defective host
4. Use Veeam's quick migration to migrate vms back to the repaired host --> https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

Please note:
I assume you don't use a vCenter with a single host. Therefore the id of the VM will change with the restore to a new host. Veeam will recnognize those VMs as new VMs and requires you to start a new backup chain (Active Full).

Best,

Hi Fabian, thanks for the reply.
Once I've deployed the esxi host, will I need to licence it? It is showing as a 30 day trial at the moment.
