ESXi 5.5 Backup to attached USB HDD on NAS
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to Backup my ESXi 5.5 to a USB HDD, connected to my NAS (Synology DS212j), with Veeam B&R.
Now my two Questions:
1. I understand that I need to have a NFS folder on my NAS, but how could I "map" my external HDD as a NFS?
2. In the meantime, when I'm trying to connect just to a simple NFS folder based on my NAS, i alwasy get the following error:
Timed out waiting for operation "(cd /tmp && perl
veeam_soap83d7e8c0-9484-414e-9879-a1b6beedc760.pl -d -c -l
lib83d7e8c0-9484-414e-9879-a1b6beedc760 -e
/tmp/veeam_error83d7e8c0-9484-414e-9879-a1b6beedc760 2>>
/tmp/veeam_error83d7e8c0-9484-414e-9879-a1b6beedc760) || cat
/tmp/veeam_error83d7e8c0-9484-414e-9879-a1b6beedc760 2>&1"
timeout: 100000 ms
Thanks a lot
Dario

Hello Dario,
Not sure I fully understand your setup. If you need to backup your VMs to this external USB HDD, why not to connect it to the backup server directly?
Adding NFS shares to backup server directly is not possible. You should either mount it to the Linux box and then add this server to the backup console or present it as a CIFS share and add it as a backup repository.
Thanks!

Hi Vitaliy,
It's not possible to connect a external USB Drive to a ESXi Server.. But yeah, that would be the perfect way.
And, using an external Drive for creating a remote-folder is also not possible..
thanks!

Dario,
Is there any technical reason for that or you just don't have USB slots on the ESXi host? Can you add your NAS box with the attached USB drive as CIFS share rather than NFS?
Thanks!
