Exit TSM - dealing with restore obilgations of old data
Hello,
I think many companies that have chosen Veeam B&R product replacing TSM, have run into the same dilemma.
Customers pay for 7 or 10 years of storage of backupdata and the possibility to restore data from any point of time.
How can this be solved this without having to retain the expensive TSM-solution for a few servers only ?

I think a valid license is needed to be able to restore from TSM backups. If that is the case, and you don't want to keep TSM around for 7-10 years, I guess you need to get the data out of TSM by restoring it, for example to separate "yearly" vms, then back those up with Veeam and put the backups where you can store them the cheapest.

Thanks Daniel,
that might be a way since customer may not want to save ALL data on a vm,
maybe just some handpicked folders/files.

This is a common question that motivated us to have discussions with S2|DATA to understand their offering for data retrieval from backups created by legacy backup software. Have you by any chance heard of, or had discussions with them? They have a solution that is able to read backups from many applications, such as TSM, without needing the original software. You can then selectively choose what to restore.

Hello Jason,
most interesting.
Do you have more details about the company and offering, pricing examples or such ?

Sure thing. The offering works in one of a couple ways. You either send backup media to them where they scan and make a catalog of contents for advanced searching, or they install it on-premises where they either come onsite, or assist remotely in doing the same. Restores from an onsite deployment will naturally restore locally, while ones done at their site will be sent back via tape, FTP, etc.
Their pricing model varies depending on the workload type, which can carry varying levels of complexity. I don’t have a full pricing list for them, but if you would like to email me at jason.leiva@veeam.com with your name and company info, I will connect with your Veeam Engineer and get the connection made for more info.
