Feature Req: restoring files in a restricted ESX environment

Post by AH3011 »

We share our VMware environment with our colleagues in a different department. They manage the overall environment but we have ESX hosts and datastores that are dedicated to our (school system) use. We have admin accounts with full access to the ESX environment - but this is not suitable for daily use by the VEEAM system.(For example our passwords expire every 30 days) To give VEEAM access to our virtual machines we requested and were given a user account that does not have any password expiration rules, but that is limited to having only access to our schools hosts and datastores. As a result, we have identified that when attempting a Non-Windows OS file restore, the “temporary VM” that is created by VEEAM is not created in an accessible datastore - the ability to restore files then fails. When specifying the restore location we need the ability in the UI to specify where the datastore is created so that File-level restore is possible and the restoration process is successful. We do not have a problem when completing a Windows File Restore. We have also confirmed that when using our unrestricted admin accounts the restoration process is successful.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,
in many cases customer use Veeam with a limited vCenter account, but you need to follow the below permission guidelines. Please check with you Admin what functionality is not working correctly and if all vCenter rights are given for this usecase.

Hi
Thanks for your response. These permissions say nothing about access to specific clusters only. Would you expect the account to have full browse and low-level file access to ALL datastores in our environment? Our admin has given us full access but just to our cluster. We have no access to the root datastores where we can see this temporary VM is created. We want the ability to create this temporary VM within a datastore we have full access to.

Regards,
Andrew

Please check the document. There are some permissions that we need globally by design of VMware. Usually they are not really problematic and you will get those at the admins.
