Forward Incremental vs Reverse Incremental Backup

Post by jamerson »

Dear all,
We have been using Forward Incremental Backup for ages now storages are getting full with twice full backup each weeks.

after we change it to Forward Incremental Forever (we have disabled enable synthetic full backups and/or active full backups).
what it gonna happens with the old files ? i see there are two full backup files, would those be deleted automatically ?
We are backing up 10 VMS to a extern storage.
which one do you advies to use ?

Reverse Incremental Backup
Forever Forward Incremental Backup

Hi Julien,

for the first part of your question. The older backup files (incl. the fulls) will be deleted if not needed anymore for the restore points. So for example if you have a retention of 7 and you perform 7 backups with Forward Forever Incremental, all the older files should have beend deleted automatically.

External storage question:
This depends on what you want to achive.
If this storage is fast and you will not use changeable media, use Forver Forward Incremental.
If your storage is slow or you use changeable meda, use Synth Fulls + Incremental.
