Re: Free space on datastore.
Hi Nick,
by default VBR alarms you when datastore has less than 10% of free space. I would suggest to increase datastore so you have 15-20% left.
Do you use Veeam ONE? It has a number of capacity planning reports which help to estimate the needed amount based on the performance trends.
Thanks!

Hi Shestakov, thanks for the quick reply.
No, we do not have Veeam ONE.
I did increase datastore capacity...let's see what happens...

Break/fix approach can certainly help here, but using a proactive approach in monitoring your infrastructure would be a preferred way, especially when Veeam Availability Suite has Veeam ONE license key included > Predefined Veeam ONE Reports, Predefined Veeam ONE Dashboards and Data Protection Monitoring.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: Free space on datastore.
When I upgraded to 9.5 I started receiving warnings on a number of my virtual machines because Veeam detected the amount of free space being less than 10%. I decreased that to 5% and a lot of the warnings went away, but not all of them. My recommendation would be to add an option so that I can select either a percentage or an amount of actual disk space remaining (it was previously 10 GB). So if I have a very large datastore, say greater than 1 TB, I don't need to have a significant amount of disk space available just so I don't get a warning from Veeam.
My biggest concern is that if this warning is always happening, it will be ignored, which then defeats the purpose of having a warning.
I did open case #02066626 and they said the best way to get the developers to look into this is to post it on the forums.

Hello Miach,
I believe the idea is to keep VBR UI from monitoring options overloading. If you have Veeam ONE you may adjust the alarms for every datastore.
Thanks

Re: Free space on datastore.
10% is the official VMware best practice. If you don't care to follow them - you could simply reduce this value to whatever makes sense to you, potentially even down to 1% (which is by an order of magnitude smaller than the best practice)? In fact, setting this value to 1% will let you get warnings at 10GB for a 1TB datastore - just as you had this configured previously.micahvm wrote: I decreased that to 5% and a lot of the warnings went away, but not all of them.

Is there a reason that this was changed from 10GB in version 9.0 to 10% in version 9.5?Gostev wrote: 10% is the official VMware best practice.

Re: Free space on datastore.
The primary reason, I believe, it was adjusted with VMware best practice. 10% is much more flexible than the fixed threshold, considering variety of environment sizes (10 GB of free space is way too low for a multi-TB production datastore holding large VMs).

[MERGED] Minimum required space to perform a backup
Hi
I'm currently managing to migrate from Veeam 7 to Veeam 9.5.
I've deployed a second Veeam 9.5 infrastructure next to my existing v7 one and I'm migrating step by step all my jobs.
I've got an issue with one VM: it consists in a VMDK 1,95TB hosted in a 2TB datastore.
Despite the low space potentially used for snapshots, the Veeam 7 job performs successfully (the night during minimal usage to limit snapshot size) but on Veeam 9.5:
31/05/2017 03:16:05 :: Production datastore XXXXX is getting low on free space (46.8 GB left), and may run out of free disk space completely due to open snapshots.
How is calculated this minimum requirement? Has it evolved since Veeam 7? Can I bypass this control?
Thank you in advance

Re: Veem backup Error unsufficient free disk
Hi Jack and welcome to the community!
It seems you went below 10% of free disk space which is minimum by the best practices of VMware.
Please review this thread for additional information. Thanks!

Re: Free space on datastore.
Hi Jack,
You can find it in General Options -> Notifications -> Skip VM processing when free disk space is below, by lowering this parameter the job should start processing.
However, I'd recommend you to contact the support team and let them take a look on the issue with the disk space. Thanks!

[MERGED] Why is space required on the datastore to be backed
Hi,
The host to be backed up is Vmware ESXi 6.0 hosting 4 VMs: 2 Linux and 2 Windows.
I am trying to back up one Windows VM.
VEAAM is running on a physical Windows 7 Pro machine on the network. The backup drive NAS with 5.2TB free space which is visible as a Windows shared folder.
When I start the backup I get the error: "Skipping VM Processing due to insufficient free disk space on datastore datastore1."
We know that the space is low on that datastore. That is why we want to back it up - so we can safely re-configure the space.
It seems we are trapped. Why does Veeam need space available on the datastore to be backed up? Is there any way around this?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Mel

[MERGED] Mandatory Free space size at Datastore of the sourc
Hi..
a Veeam novice here.. We subcontracted the Veeam Backup & Recovery portion of a project to another company.. Below are the details of the infrastructure and the current issue requiring guidance:
Using..
VMware vCenter Server v 5.5.0
Veeam Backup & Replication v 9.5.0.1038
DR site:
Only one host; Drive type: None-SSD; Capacity: 5.45TB; Free space: 4.81TB [already has 9 App VM replicas]
Data center site: 2 hosts; one for DB VMs, one for App VMs
For host-1, has 9 App VMs; disk backup, tape backup & replication all done... No issues there..
For host-2,
Physical server internal storage has eight 800GB SSD in Raid 1+0; Drive type: SSD; Capacity: 2.9TB; Free space: 1.52TB
Hosting 1 production SQL DB VM ; Provision space: 2.06TB; Used space:1.38TB
Plan: Backup & replicate the production SQL DB VM to DR
Issue reported by subcontractor: Free space available in repository of the host of the production SQL DB VM is not enough for the VM snapshot to be taken during the snapshot process including the space required for corresponding tasks for the replication process. He says if the replication job is started and if there is issue on the job process completion [i.e. during taking snapshot, creating backup, delta files, compression, data moving, decompress, write, commit vm snapshot, consolidation..], there is a chance that the source production SQl DB VM might fail...
He suggests that the DB size be optimized/reduced [as the actual DB size is much smaller... which requires support with another vendor supporting the DB]
OR he asks that source host datastore be increased by adding two 800GB SSDs.
Kindly help to understand if this is a correct assessment by the subcontractor.

Re: Mandatory Free space size at Datastore of the source hos
In short, if you have an SQL DB VM of size 1.38TB and if its host has free space of 1.52TB, will an application aware replication job for the SQL DB VM to another host's datastore complete successfully?
If not, will the attempt affect the condition of the source SQL DB VM?

Re: Insufficient free disk space on production datastore
Hi Akli,
First: Welcome to the forums!
When you take a backup, you will have a VMware snapshot. The VM disks are made read-only, and every virtual disk gets a delta file. All changes that occur during the backup are written to those delta files.
How much space is left at the datastore (Not the free space on the 3TB disk)?
Cheers
Mike

Hi Mike
thank you for your quick reply
the free space in the LUN in the datastore is 185 GB.
the total LUN space is fully allocated for the VM disk

Re: Free space on datastore.
Hello
We have two VMware 6 vSphere hosts with a vCenter with high availability.
We have two datastores
datastore1 with 2.2TB with 200GB free
datastore2 with 3.46TB with 299GB free
We've put the virtual servers C-drive on datastore1, and their datadisk on datastore2, as to guard against differences in growth.
In Veeam Backup & Replication we have:
Datastore warning percentage set to 6%
Datastore skip-job percentage set to 4%
We would like to ask for a "Feature Request", that we can get separate percentages for the two datastores as their usages are different. We don't have super growth rates or super high change rate during snapshot / backup.
Regards
Pierre

Please reread my request.
I wan't separate percentages for separate datastores, when a VM spans multiple datastores.

Hi Shim,
Welcome to Veeam Community Forums and thanks for posting!
In your particular situation, you should add or free some space to get your VM backed up.
Please note, that Veeam Management Pack offers great handy reports that can help you to better manage space on your datastores: Virtual Machines. Snapshot Summary, Datastores. Space Usage Heatmap, Datastores. Overprovisioned Storage, and more!
Thanks
