Gateway servers

Post by InFrance »

Hi,

We have a single Veeam backup server(site A) that manages backups for both our sites.
1 backup job is configured to backup all virtual servers on both sites directly to object storage
There is a windows proxy server on site B.

I have noticed that the backup job uses only 1 Gateway server; the veeam backup server on site A.
This means that backups are being transfered from site B to site A before being transfered to object storage.

The connection mode on the object repository is configured in "direct mode".
I assumed this meant that the backup job would use the proxy server on site A or B as a gateway server.(both proxy servers are listed under managed Windows servers)

In order to use 2 Gateway servers, please can you tell me if I need to need to also add 2 managaged Windows servers and then specifically configure the repository with the 2 Gateway servers instead of direct mode?

Perhaps it is better to split the job into 2 separate backup jobs instead of one.

Many thanks

Hi InFrance,

Just to confirm quick, in the job itself, do you see that both the Veeam server (proxy A) and the Windows proxy on site B (proxy B) are both used or does just one proxy get used?

Splitting the job likely will help here and also assist with ensuring there is no chance for the cross-site traffic by configuring both a dedicated proxy for each site. You can create a new job and then us the Backup Move to new job to move the backups to this job, or just start fresh.

It should work just fine with Direct mode and separate jobs with dedicated proxies. Are you in a position to set up a quick test job for site B and set proxy B as the dedicated proxy?

Hi,
Thank you for your reply

Both proxies are being used but only the gateway server on site A is being used for all virtual servers.

As you suggested, I will try creating a test job and use the dedicated proxy on site B to see if the gateway server on site B is also used.
If that works, I will split the jobs

I will let you know

Hi,

I performed the test you suggest

I modified an existing backup job and dedicated the proxy server on site B
The backup job does then use the correct gateway server on site B

If I change the proxy server selection to automatic on the same job, the proxy on site B is used but then the gateway server on site A is used.

I will split the backup job into 2 separate jobs to resolve my problem

Many Thanks

Glad to hear it works, and glad I could advise. Splitting the jobs makes sense, and I think ultimately gives more control over ensuring that the data flows remain local to their sites.
