[VEEAM BACKUP] GFS Point

Post by AbdelO »

Hi experts !

I would like to set up a retention policy on my immutable repository backups but there is some information that I don't understand at the GFS level.

I would like to have :

- 1 backup per week and at the end of the month keep only the last backup
- 1 backup per month and at the end of the year keep only the last month backup

Is it that the configuration must be done at the backup job or the copy backup the immutable repository ?

Also, how to set it up in the advanced GFS options?

Thanks in advance !

Hi Abdel

The configuration is done in your backup copy job.

With GFS you can say how many weekly, monthly or yearly backups you want to keep.
You cannot configure keeping 12 monthly gfs backups through the year. Then delete all of them at once on the 1st of January and only keep the latest one.

I recommend keeping it simple.
Configure a short-term retention of 30 days to have daily backup copies.
Second, configure a GFS retention of 4 weekly and 12 monthly.
With this setting, you can restore data from any day from the last 30-35 days and from the last 12 months.
Would that work? Or do you see an issue with such configuration for your backup design?

Thanks
