How to exclude Drive F from VM Veeam snapshot

Post by ChromeH »

I there,

I'd like to exclude the drive F from VM Snapshot because this folder contain the various data and size is too big (picture, vdo) that is not important for backup and will it help me to save the disk space.

How to identify that drive F is IDE, SCSI, SATA or NVMe?

There are Drive C F E on this VM. only F I would exclude.

Thanks!

Hello Parson

If the disks have different sizes, you can compare look up the disk id in the VM properties.

1. Windows, check the size of your disk:

2. vCenter, check the disk with the same size in the VM properties for protocol and id

3. Exclude disk in backup job. Remove the ID you have found out in vCenter:

As an additional check, you can open the disk properties in windows to compare the ID with the one in vCenter:

Hello Mildur

In Select disk screen is mean that the disk are showing on this screen will be backup am I correct? Firstly it was select on the All disks

E.g., if I have SCSI 0:0 / 0:1 / 0:2 and I don't need 0:2 then remove 0:2 from this screen?

Correct.
Disks showing in that window will be protected by the backup job.

Another simple way to exclude a virtual disk from snapshots (and thus from backups) is to simply set it as Independent in the VM settings.

In case of restore VM it will not restore the latest data in Drive F since I excluded it?

E.g., I snapshot Drive F until 1st Feb 2024 and I was excluded since 5th Feb.

If I restore the VM from 5th Feb the data that stored in Drive F will be on 1st Feb or it empty?

More question, This VM running with the NAS for storage (Datastore) not in the host itself. To verify that all disk on this VM are snapshot (Except Drive F) can I see in the Hardware Configuration in ESXi?

Thanks!

You need to change the DiskMode to Independed (Read the Manual first!) in ESXi. Veeam have to trigger a VM Snapshot and cant avoit it. Configuring a Exclude within Veeam only skip a Disk from Backup.

You can specify another Directory, on a Datastore with more space to save the Snapshots on VM level.
