HP Storage support protocol for Storage integrationn
Hi guy,
I confirmed about HP storage to support(Case # 00688061 ), and got following answer.
---
In order to make the storage snapshots work, we need to connect the supported storage to the Veeam B&R server, and to the proxy as well.
There are different protocols we can use when connecting to Veeam B&R server and Proxy.
HP StoreServ To Veeam B&R server : FC or iSCSI
HP StoreVirtual To Veeam B&R server: iSCSI
HP StoreServ To Proxy: FC
HP StoreVitual To Proxy: FC or iSCSI
IF YOU ARE USEING VEEAM B&R SERVER AS A PROXY
HP StoreServ To Veeam B&R server: FC
HP StoreVitual To Veeam B&R server: iSCSI
---
But I cannot believe it, because we can use BfSS with HP StoreVirtual VSA, if I stop Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service in Veeam B&R server.
Do you know correctly info?

Hi Yukinobu,
As to the supported protocols and ways of the communication, then it does matter whether it is a backup server or not, the point is that you need to have either of the connections below to the proxy server:
HP 3PAR (StoreServ) : FC, iSCSI
HP StoreVirtual : iSCSI
Thanks!
Seems like there was a slight misunderstanding between you and our support engineer, Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service is not required by Veeam B&R and integration components. When Veeam backup server launches storage rescan job, we are using our own initiator, thus Microsoft service could be shut down.Yukinobu wrote:But I cannot believe it, because we can use BfSS with HP StoreVirtual VSA, if I stop Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service in Veeam B&R server.

And just to make myself clear on the requirements - Microsoft iSCSI Initiator on the proxy server is still required if you want to use storage snapshots for the backup job.

Hi Vitaliy,
Thank you so much.
HP StoreVirtual support is iSCSI only?
User Guide wrote:

HP StoreVirtual Storage System
1.The role of the VMware backup proxy must be assigned to a Microsoft Windows machine. This can be a dedicated machine or the Veeam backup server performing a role of the default VMware backup proxy.
2.The VMware backup proxy must have a direct access to the storage system via Fibre Channel or iSCSI. To connect to the storage system, the VMware backup proxy must have an iSCSI initiator enabled or Fibre Channel adapter installed.
3.[For a Fibre Channel connection only] Fibre Channel devices must be properly installed and zoned.
Thank you so much.

Yes, it is iSCSI only as per our Release Notes document, see below
P.S. I will ask to change our on-line documentation.Release Notes wrote:HP StoreVirtual (LeftHand / P4000 series) and StoreVirtual VSA
• iSCSI connectivity only.
• SAN/iQ version 9.5 or later

This really needs to be called out in the documentation. I've lost 3 days now working with Veeam support who aren't aware of this simple fact - even after I mentioned to L1/L2 that I had HW initiators on the proxy (case ID: 00742817). I switched to SW removed/added the storage and it worked. Switched back to HW initiators and it's not working again (that's when I found this thread.)
