Instant recovery question

Post by ics »

Hello

We have a SAN failure and the Datastores are not reachable.
I try a instant recovery and as I remember this use vPower NFS to start the VM.

But it looks that also the original Datastore is needed and the recovery,
fail because of snapshot failure.

Can someone confirm?

thx

Was it restore to original or to different location? What exact error did you get? Thanks!

I used different location,
to change the name, but I cant change the datastore here.
After the vm was created, I get :

02.12.2021 11:29:45 Error Creating VM snapshot A general system error occurred:

and then

02.12.2021 11:29:46 Error Failed to publish VMxxx_rec Error: Failed to create VM snapshot

CreateSnapshot failed, vmRef vm-94935, timeout 1800000, snName VEEAM IO REDIRECTION SNAPSHOT, snDescription , memory False, quiesce False

A general system error occurred:

This is the hole session. Why taking a snapshot?

Code: Select all

The base disk in the backup files is read only.
In an instant vm recovery session, vmware needs to write the changes from the vm to a file.

Because the base disk is read only, veeam creates a snapshot. This Changes will be written to the snapshot file.
And this snapshot file is stored by default on the vPowerNFS Server. Or if you choose a Datastore on the hypervisor.

When you finalize the instant recovery session, the changes in the snapshot file are committed to the base disk and will be stored on the production datastore you have choosen in the finalize wizard.

Hello,

@ics
Just for testing purposes, it would be interesting try to redirect redo logs to another datastore and to check whether the issue persists or not. Also, please share a support case ID as requested when you post about technical issue.

Thanks!
