LAN free Backup with NFS Store

Post by she »

We are testing veeam with our esxi servers and nfs store.
Our 3 esxi5 server are connected with 10Gbe over NFS to 2 NAS Server which are running as storage for the VMs and as storage for backing up the VMs.
In the moment I am using ghettoVCB and the backup is running from one nfs store direct to the second nfs store without using the VMs LAN interface
(like the LAN free solution with SAN or iscsi from veeeam)
I tried veeam running in a VM with W2K8 which worked but there is no way to directly store my backup on the nfs store.
1. I cant mount the nfs store inside of the veeam VM
2. There is no network path from the production LAN to the nfs store, its seperated
3. I dont want to use any Linux system as proxy to export the nfs store

I also tried trilead vmx explorer, which does this store to store backup, but there are other problem with this product (performance, ink Backup, etc..)

Is there any solution for my problem ?

Yes, there is! If you add a new virtual disk, which will be used to store all your backup files, to your repository VM and then place this disk on your NFS datastore, you will have a LAN free backup.

Hello Vitaliy

yes this solution is clear , but not what we want.
I need a solution to save directly to this nfs store, without a virtual disk

Recommended approach is to create a tiny stripped down Linux appliance (no window system is needed) and mount NFS share on it, then add Linux server as a backup repository. If you don't want to use Linux, then you can also install NFS client (Windows component) on any Windows server (for example, directly on your proxy), and configure that to mount your NFS share. Thanks!

Hello Gostev

thanks for your info. With Linux as a proxy is clear, I tried this but this a a second machine which we want to avoid.
With windows nfs client I didnt try it because I thout there is a problem with the buildin nfs server of veeam ?
I will try this today

Backup proxy server does not have vPower NFS server deployed, so there shouldn't be any problems.

The nfs client under win7 has a so bad performance, so this is not a solution.
Will try it again with linux as a nfs proxy
