Machine hangs during full backup of a large VM
As in thread title pretty much.
The smaller VMs complete backups successfully.
But the bigger VM (~1.5 TB) will get about halfway and lock up. At first I thought the system was BSOD'ing, but I have disabled "Automatic restart on blue screen" and the system doesn't halt at all -- it's almost like something is rebooting it.
Nothing informative in the event log, except "The last reboot at HH:MM was unexpected"
Any ideas before I am forced to reinstall the entire system?
Software Versions:
----
- Veeam v7 on Server 2012 which is running as a VM. Have tried E1000E and VMXNET3 network adapters.
- vCenter Server 5.1 for management
- ESXi 5.1 on the host

Hello,
Do you see this VM stun during snapshot commit operation or it hangs/reboots in the middle of the backup job? Do you see any reasons for this reboot in VMware VM logs?
Thank you!

Just to be sure, is the Veeam server hunging, or the VM that is being backed up? Any problem inside the VM like low free space (it creates problem if you enable VSS backups for example)?

Nope -- it will just crash out at random times. I've seen it hang 40% through reading the VM's disk.Vitaliy S. wrote:Hello,

The virtual machine is hanging (not the host and not the VM being backed up) is effected. And it's not hanging -- it is restarting, like someone walked up to it and pressed the reset button. There is plently of CPU, Disk Space and RAM allocated.dellock6 wrote:Just to be sure, is the Veeam server hunging, or the VM that is being backed up? From what I can tell, it is not blue screening. The OS doesn't seem aware of the reboot. The event log shows "The last reboot at HH:MM was unexpected". No minidumps are created at C:\windows\minidump either. Like someone pressed the reset button.

Are you using application aware processing?
Try a crash consistent backup.

Not using application aware processing.
How do I configure a crash consistent backup?

Crash consistent backup is the backup without VSS, so you are already using it.
You said before:

is still not very clear. If is not the VM being backed up to crash, so is the Veeam Server????The virtual machine is hanging (not the host and not the VM being backed up) is effected

Okay -- my machine which runs veeam is restarting. The VM which is being backed up is fine.

I would contact technical support with this, to review the proxy logs. Is it used as a default proxy to process your VMs?

I would also check VMware VM logs, as a restart command reason should also be reflected there.breakaway wrote:Okay -- my machine which runs veeam is restarting. The VM which is being backed up is fine.
