Map the backup chain

Post by nokogerra »

Hello there.
Veeam B&R 9.5u3a.

There is a backup job, which includes 8 VMs. 2 VMs were reregistered, so their uuids and morefs were changed. Now I have to readd them to the backup job, but I'm not sure if I should map the existing backup chain to this job. I mean if there is a single VM in the job, it is pretty clear: you should readd VM to the job and map the existing backup chain, all of the restore point are related to this VM for sure. But in my case it will be counted as 2 new VMs were added to the job and, I guess, backup server doesn'nt know what restore points are related to these particular 2 VMs.

Correct, B&R Server detect them as new VMs. You can not map it to older restore points.

If you add them to the job again (or automatically by a group object) then next job run will perform a new full and proceed with the chain.

Hello Andreas.
Thanks for your reply.
If you add them to the job again (or automatically by a group object) then next job run will perform a new full and proceed with the chain.
And I can't do anything with that?

Well, I want to readd these 2 VMs to the backup job and to map the corresponding existing restore points to them, so there will be no new backup chains.

I see, but why not let Veeam create additional backup from the VM and let Veeam the old one delete over time? Problem solved?
There are so many things arround Change BLock Tracking and consistency that are better addressed by a new chain rather than mapping those.

Oh and let me add that the request would not be supported by VMware.

The only thing that I worry about, is that old backup chain won't be deleted due to retention policy, I will have to delete it manually.

Depending on the backup mode the VMs will be deleted over time from the chain.
There is a setting to control the rest.
