Migration between two vCenter ?

Post by yathus »

Hello,

We have a vCenter 7.0 infra with 80 VM backuped by Veeam v12 (latest version).
We have to move the VM to another new vCenter (certainly 8.0).

1. We want to use Veeam to migrate with replication (hot replication while vm is running, then we stop the VM, quick replication and we started it on the new vCenter)
2. We dont want to loose current backup chain (more than 100To with REFS)

We did that multiple times, it's OK but we always have to start new backup from zero.
This time we don't have enough space available to keep "old backup from VM from old vCenter " and start new backup from same VM on new vCenter...

I find this KB : https://www.veeam.com/kb2136 but not compatible with v12.

May be there is another solution ?

Best regards,

Yathus

Hi Yathus

We know about the request to provide a tool to update the MoRefID for such migrations. But I don't have an ETA yet when we have it as a feature in the product.

Today "Quick migration" is the supported way to migrate VMs between two vCenters with continuing the backup chains.
Rhe requirements is to keep the VM running when you start the quick migration. The option "Delete source VM files upon successful migration" must be enabled in the quick migration wizard. And you must make sure that VMware tools are installed and running.

Quick Migration Wizard: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
If you want to delete the VM for which the migration was launched (source VM; for Instant Recovery, this is the VM created during Instant Recovery but before finalization), leave the Delete source VM files upon successful migration check box selected. All jobs to which the VM is added will switch to the target VM. The backup chains will be continued, thus, the next job sessions for the VM will be incremental.

Hi Fabian, any update on this request? I have needed to update the MoRefID a number of times over the years and found myself needing to do it again and I can't on v12 it seems.

Thank you.

Hey Mike,

Unfortunately, there are no ETA updates to the potential MoRefID tool. But if something changes, we will let you know.

I know the pain of broken chains. I'll leave this here for reference, however just note it's probably not supported.

Hi guys

I wanted to update this topic.
Last week, we reintroduced our vCenter migration tool (Veeam VM Migrator Tool). The tool is supported starting in version 12.2 and is compatible with configurations using both MSSQL and PostgreSQL databases.

Please check the Knowledge Base article for more information: https://www.veeam.com/kb2136

Ooooooo... I might have to test this in my home lab... does it work with CE?
Also... "This Veeam-developed tool is provided as a courtesy and is not supported by Veeam Technical Support." Uhhh OK will it ever be supported?
