MSA2040 SAS Controllers & Veeam

Post by jrankine » 1 person likes this post

I have an MSA2040 with 2 SAS controllers, and I have two esx hosts plugged in with a 2 port sas hba, one connection per controller.
I would like to plug my physical vcenter server that has veeam installed on it, directly into the MSA2040 as well with a 2 port SAS HBA. Will I be able to perform veeam backups in this configuration and is it supported?

Hi John,

Are you trying to configure something similar to this setup??

Thanks!

Sort of, in that scenario the person is connecting each host to the SAN controller via direct ethernet connections. In my scenario I am connecting directly to the hosts via direct SAS connection.

If this allows the vCenter server/Veeam backup server connect to the hosts and manage it/see it, then backups will be also possible. Let's see if other community members have done anything similar.

Hello,

we run a similar setup; we have 3 physical ESXi hosts directly connected to our MSA 2040 via SAS and 1 physical veeam server also directly connected to the SAN via SAS. We had to install MPIO iirc on the 2008R2 veeam server.

Veeam runs in direct-SAN-access mode with exceptional backup speeds.

Kind regards, -sd
