Netapp snapshots or backup job?

Post by GregorD »

I use b&r 9.5u4 enterprise plus , vmware , netapp as storage.
Can someone tell me what are differences when i backup more vm with a backup job and when i have a veeam job which take netapp snapshoot.
Ok i know snapshoot ghe whole datastore is backuped up.
But the other thing is the time snapshots 40 seconds by backup jobs 3 hours.
Are the restore option different?

The main benefit of a Veeam NetApp Backup from Storage Snapshot is the impact to the VMs and the ESXi Hosts in general.

- VMs snapshots are open just for a few "moments"
- Main Traffic is between NetApp Storage and Backup Proxy (Can be separated from production Lan)

But there's one problem: if a VM has already a snapshot when Backup starts, the fallback transport mode is used for this VM.

Restore Options are not limited with Veeam NetApp Backup from Storage Snapshot

Another Question Are there a Problem when a vm backup Job start first at 23:00 backup Needs 2 Hours till 1 o Clock NetApp snaphot run at 0:00 for 40 Seconds.
Should i Change the scheduler of NetApp snaphot that this will be at 22:50?

Hi Gregor, it is not clear what type of jobs you're referring to, backup from storage snapshots that basically creates the same backup file in repository as a regular backup job, but takes data from the storage snapshot, or snapshot-only jobs that just create storage snapshots on the array. Anyway, I recommend to review these user guide sections since they describe all the differences between job types in detail. This section describes differences in restore as well as allowed restore options.

As to your second question, there shouldn't be an issue with taking storage snapshot while the backup job is running.
