Notifications/VM Notes - Format changeable?

Post by TimJWatts »

Hi,

In the Backup Job screen, there's a field Notifications/VM Notes. I have it set to write an attribute "Backup" to the VM object.

It would be very useful to be able to redefine the string so that date/time came first - then I could sort the display in Vsphere/Client to show machines in the order of last backup (useful to be able to see if some are not getting backed up).

Any way to edit this string format - registry perhaps?

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Foggy,

Sadly - as clever as it is, it's not what I'm looking for. I do not use PowerShell at all.

It's possible I could use the VMWare Perl SDK to parse the "Backup" VM attribute I've set in all the jobs - but all I really wanted was a way to customise the format of the attribute string, printf() style, so a simple sort on that attribute would give me an ordered list by date - whereas at the mo, it will sort by Backup Job Name first.

Anyway, thanks for the tip - gave me some ideas :)

Cheers,

Tim

[MERGED] VM notes message, can I customize it?

Post by Peejay62 »

When using the advanced option for VM notes, Is there a way to customize the message Veeam puts into the chosen attribute field after succesfull backup? It now puts in a complete time and date string and even more text. For me, just putting in an X or something would be sufficient (so I can easily check a machine being backed up or not). Adding an entry field where on can put in the required message would do the trick I guess. Even better would be to be able to use the notes in any circumstance, not just for good jobs but als for failed or warning jobs. Anyway, is there a way to customize the message?

You can only change the note name (instead of Notes u can change it to "backup" for eg) which will be added but the message is static for now. You can always use PowerCLI/Powershell and read the notes for parsing

Found this old thread, so I might as well ask here.

I too would like to configure the message that's put in the vCenter "Notes" field after successful backup.
Having the date&time come first would allow an easy visual scan of the column.

Thanks....Lyle

[MERGED] Successful backup details to this VM attribute

Post by eanderson »

Is there a way to configure this notification so that only the date and time get set in the VM attribute? Currently we are getting all the "gory" details;
Veeam Backup: Job name: [xxxxx], Time: [4/14/2016 7:26:37 PM], Backup host: [xxxx], Backup folder: [[xxxxxxx] xxxxx]

We only want the time and date stamp. I have not found any information on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Eric,
Please review the thread above.
Also, you can specify "Subject" both in global and job-specific notification settings.
Will that work for you?
Thanks!

I want to add myself to the list of users that would like to change what is written to the vmattribute for the backups. Some of my teammates use Vcenter for quick checks on whether a VM has been backed up.
Is there a way we can add this as a feature request?
Thanks!

You've already done it by posting on the Community forums.

I have the same request, would be a good solution, if the Developers can check their backups status, but the Entry in the Attribute Field is too complex.
Are there any news on this?
Thanks!

Hello Jürgen,
and welcome to the forums.

Just to clarify. Your developers are confused by job-name, host and folder and cannot find the "time" field?

Hi Hannes,
In vcenter Overview, of the VM there is only: "Veeam Backup: Job Name: [Nameofthejob],Time..."
on a standard 24" Display FHD. I have to edit the attributes to get to the Date/Time information.
Not a big issue, but would be fine to see it on the first check on the VM.
For me not necessary is: "Veeam Backup: Job Name: ..."
The most important thing is the last successful Backup Time.
br Juergen
