Only Disk 1 failed (OS Disk) while another disk in the same VM can backup with success.

Post by kasidit »

Hi,

Veeam Case #07168591
I'm facing a problem with some VM guests that failed to backup because only Harddisk 1 (OS disk) failed while another disk, such as Harddisk 2 (Drive D) succeeded. I already tested by using only 1 Proxy to backup both Harddisk1 and Harddisk2 but only Harddisk1 was failed.

The Veeam support team told me from the Log that I uploaded in case. The error shows about network connection and he asks me to check the firewall refer to https://www.veeam.com/kb2140

But all backup components such as VBR, Proxy, Repo, vCenter, ESXi, and target VM guest for backup are at the same Data Center. No traffic passes through the Firewall.

I have around 250 VM+ backups with this VBR but a few VMs found this issue.

I have no idea why it is happening. It would be great if anyone can share ideas to investigate or fix this problem.

Example Error
14:25:38 Error: Unstable connection: unable to transmit data. Failed to upload disk '>' Agent failed to process method {DataTransfer.SyncDisk}. Exception from server: End of file Unable to retrieve next block transmission command. Number of already processed blocks: [84078]. Failed to download disk 'Temp_Clone-xxxxxxxx-flat.vmdk'.

VBR Version 12A
vCenter 8.0.2

Best regards

Hi - I agree, this does look extremely typical to be caused by a firewall with deep packed inspection dropping certain packets. Especially if it is not random, but always triggers on the same disks/blocks - this happens because their content matches some threat signature. But if you really don't have a firewall, or if it's random disks/blocks each time, then the next most likely reason is some faulty networking equipment. Suggest you look for some networking consultant to help you understand where packet loss happens on your network. Regards

Did you ever find a solution for this? I am experiencing almost this exact issue on VB&R 12. Support instantly went to its a firewall issue, but there are no firewalls in path, so we are still investigating. Thanks.
