Hello,
I have a customer with backup job with Ontap snapshot as target and Ontap snapvault as secondary target.
What does it exactly means ?
I understand the first target is only to perform a snapshot but for snapvault as secondary target , what is it exactly ?
Then, he has also backup job with repository as target (to use the snapshot present on the netapp).
That means he has 3 times the data ? 2 on the storage array as "snapshot" and 1 in the repository right ?
Could we consider array snapshot are "backup" ? I would not but maybe I'm wrong.
Thanks for your advices to help me understand this architecture.

Re: Ontap snapshot
Hi matteu,
They're discussing snapshot orchestration, in which instead of producing the usual VBK/VIB files on a repository, the VMs are protected by create a storage snapshot on the storage itself. I'm guessing they're following this scenario from the same User Guide if there is also a normal backup chain on the repository: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

It's a loaded question
I would answer this by saying that with such a configuration, they have the ability to restore from 3 different sources right now within Veeam if the production machine goes down, one of which is a Veeam Backup that we can further copy/move to additional storage locations within Veeam. There are likely additional operations that can be done with the storage snapshots from the Netapp device itself, but I won't go into those.
I'll leave this thread for you to review on that final question as there's a bit to consider, but I am not going to tell a specific answer on storage snapshots as backups as the practical considerations are more important than this philosophical question
