Open Snapshots

My target store is on the other side of a VPN with a 5Mbps connection. One of the servers I'm backing up is about 600GB. I only run this job once a month, but it takes several days to complete. I noticed in some other threads that people mentioned that this leaves an "open snapshop" and I'm wondering what the implications of that are

VMware 5 environment on a Equallogic SAN
That same server is also backed up by BackupExec each night.
