Oracle Archive log did not delete(hidden log files)

Post by yihwang » Jan 17, 2019 2:38 am

Hello,
My customer uses Veeam server to backup windows oracle(11gr2) VM. The number of databases in the oracle vm is two.
Backup job was set with application-aware and archive logs over 15 GB option was set.
But, archive logs did not deleted even though the partition of the log was almost full(50GB).

So, I opened support case.
After remote session, Veeam Support told me that there are around 1,000 archived logs file in the partition.
But, in veeam logs, Veeam Found only around 400 archived logs by executing query.
The query is below.
Exec oracle query: SELECT FIRST_CHANGE#, BLOCK_SIZE, RECID, STAMP, NAME, THREAD#, SEQUENCE#, RESETLOGS_CHANGE#, BLOCKS*BLOCK_SIZE, TO_CHAR(SYS_EXTRACT_UTC(CAST(FIRST_TIME AS TIMESTAMP)), 'yyyy/mm/dd hh24:mi:ss'), TO_CHAR(SYS_EXTRACT_UTC(CAST(NEXT_TIME AS TIMESTAMP)), 'yyyy/mm/dd hh24:mi:ss') FROM V$ARCHIVED_LOG WHERE STATUS != 'D' AND CREATOR != 'LGWR'
Has anyone experienced this hidden archived log files?

Hello,
could you add the support case number here that we can have a closer look?

Thanks,
Hannes

Hello.

I saw the release notes and what's new for veeam update 4.
In the What's new, I saw the contents related to the oracle redo logs as below.

Oracle redo logs backup retention policy will now analyze the logs being removed in order to preserve Guaranteed Restore Points
(part of Oracle Flashback feature).

Is the above patch relevant to my issue?

Thanks in advances,

No, not really... completely unrelated.

Hello Young,
I followed the case and support was waiting for an answer from your side. Maybe something was lost in translation.

The U4 feature you mention is only relevant if you are using Oracle Flashback.

Upgrading to U4 is probably a good idea anyway as there were many other bug-fixes which are not mentioned in the "what's new" document.

Best regards,
Hannes
