Paid and free versions on the same server
Hi,
I have Veeeam B&R paid version on my management server and that backs up around 30 VMs on 3 registered servers.
I have a 4th server that is not licensed that has just a Linux VM I'd like to backup as well.
I was planning to install Veeam B&R Community version on the same management server and get that backup up and running on this new instance.
When I try to install it though, it seems that Veeam installation detects the paid version and actually only gives me the option to upgrade it.
Does anyone know if it's allowed to have both paid and free versions running on the same version?
If that is allowed, is there any workaround to allow me to do that, since the installation app obviously try to prevent me to do that?
Thanks!
Carlos

Re: Paid and free versions on the same server
Hi Carlos
as your wrote, the installation engine will detect the existing installation.
Also reg key etc are the same so it’s not possible, like with any other software, to run the same twice on the same host.
You’d have to install a second vbr server, run the Linux agent in standalone mode or buy a license for that 4th server.
Thanks

Re: Paid and free versions on the same server
I have a license for 6 sockets and I'm currently using 5, so I have a spare one.
The 4th server has 2 sockets, though.
Is there any way that I can use that spare socket on the 4th server somehow?
Otherwise, I'd need to buy an extra socket to be able to have 2 spare sockets and register the 4th server, correct?
Any clue on how much a B&R socket costs?
I asked that to my accounts manager at Veeam but he hasn't replied yet.

Re: Paid and free versions on the same server
In that case I’d recommend to wait for your veeam account manager to respond.
If you have even a spare socket it might make sense to convert all sockets to VUL (veeam Universal license) as with that you will be free to choose for what kind of backup you want to use it.
That is an option to solve your request.
Thanks

Re: Paid and free versions on the same server
I took a quick look at the VUL and it seems much more expensive than the current model.
We'll probably remain on the current model, but we haven't made a decision yet.

As mentioned best will be to talk to your veeam account manager what options you have.
Also pricing is coming from sales. As this is a technical RD forum we don’t cover such topics.
Thanks again

Re: Paid and free versions on the same server
Can you tell us whether the host that has Linux VM running is added to backup console: either as standalone server or through vCenter? If not, you can protect this VM as physical machine using Linux agent. Your current license should have number of gifted VUL instances that can be spent on this task.
More details can be found here (1.4. Gifted Product License).
Thanks!

Re: Paid and free versions on the same server
No, it's not allowed even if you create multiple separate backup servers. Our licensing policy has always specifically prohibited using multiple licenses to protect parts of the same environment. Even using two different paid licenses is also not allowed, nor free/paid combination... no combinations are allowed.ibexpayroll wrote: ↑Mar 31, 2022 5:00 pmDoes anyone know if it's allowed to have both paid and free versions running on the same version?
