Physical Backup proxy Faster than 2 x Virtual Proxy ISCSI

Post by rborhara »

Hi

I have a Physical backup Server with 4 SFP ISCSI COnnections (2 x network use and 2 x Backup SAN)
I use a Dell Equallogic SAN with SFP connections to Dedicated san switch.

Now My Physcal Server is also the management Server (1 CPU x 6 cores) and its seems to backup faster using parallel processing than 2 x Dedicated backup proxys (4 cores each adn 4gb ram)

I use IPerd to check netwoork connection speeds 3.5GB for Physical Server and 1.5 GB/s for Virtual proxys unless i open more streams
However when running active full backups i tend to get a faster throughput in VEEAM (200MB/s+) to my dr400 backup repository then when both Virtual Proxys are running (around 130MB/s)

My question is does Veeam / DR4000 backup faster with more JOBS running, rather than One job with parallel processing
The backup repository is set for 12 connections
Anything i can test to get my Virtual proxys same speed as the Physical
Virtual proxys are running ESXI 5.0.2 VMXNET3 driver shows 10GB in WIndows 2008 R2 SP1 (4 cores) VMware tools installed

Hi Rakesh,

What are the bottleneck stats for both jobs, running through physical and virtual proxy servers?

Thanks!

Uhm, based on the age of the ESXi (5.0), I have a quick doubt, even if the virtual nic is vmxnet3, is ESXi using 10G network connections? Otherwise a single proxy will be never able to create a stream faster than 125 MB/s (that is the 1Gb connection limit).

When im backing up via Physical backup Proxy (Dell HIT Tools installed so it uses MPIO) and also via 2 backup Proxy VM's the Source is the bottleneck
However the Processing rate is 86MB/s when doing incrementals on a Physical (some 20MB/s) faster than the 2 x virtuals
the Virtual Proxys dont have HIT tools as yet as some assumptions are it makes

Also does Veeam operate better when 2 or more backup jobs (not concurrent sessions) are running at the same time

Does not matter, the more jobs/tasks you run in parallel the more load will be on your proxy server CPU resources. If you have better total rates when running multiple jobs, then it means your Veeam backup proxy servers are powerful enough to handle the load. Based on the quick forum search, some people say that they have better performance in direct SAN mode when MPIO is uninstalled, so it might be worth trying this configuration as well.

I think i have come across somoehting, I have 2 x dedicated Physical NICS for ISCSI to SAN, however im only utilising 1 vNIC in my VM i actually need to add 2 x vNICS for Dell MPIO to work correctly does my i need to add another network group, hoepfully i get somewhere
ESxi 5.0 supports 10GBs it was support in ESXi 4.x too
