Question on restore points using rotated media (RDX)

Post by v33@m3r »

Hi There,

I have a question about how Veeam v8 works in the following scenario:
(I know the answer for v8 is different to the answer for v7, as it didn't use backup chains - it just created a full backup every night)

Scenario:
I have a copy job going to a repository configured for removable media. I am using 5 RDX cartridges, and they are swapped out from Monday-Friday.
I have the restore point setting set to be 5. (which should cater for one weeks worth of backups & the company does not work on Saturday or Sunday)

So - is this how it would work from the beginning??
('Week 1' below is the first week that the backups have been set up, but remember, I still only have 5 restore points configured)

Monday, Week 1 -
Job runs against Cartridge 1, this will create a full backup
Tuesday, Week 1 -
Job runs against Cartridge 2, this will create an incremental file?
Wednesday, Week 1
Job runs against Cartridge 3, this will create an incremental file?
Thursday, Week 1
Job runs against Cartridge 4, this will create an incremental file?
Friday, Week 1
Job runs against Cartridge 5, this will create an incremental file

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.. Week 2 -
Job runs against Cartridge 1, does it create a new incremental, or a full backup or what? since we only have 5 restore points, what way does it work from here onwards each day, and what should the file formats look like on all of the cartridges from here onwards ?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Please take a look at this link for more info > Configuring Backup Repositories with Rotated Drives

Let me know if that helps!
