Read one VM disk with multiple threads
As we aware from VDDK 6.X we can utilize multhiread option to read single VMDK file. Currently in Veeam we could one hard disk backup is running through one session. When we can expect single vmdk file will be backed up through multiple thread ?
As we aware if a VM contains 3 hard disk , each vmdk can use separate backup thread. So for 3 hard disk backup will happen through 3 backup thread.
Whether we can use multiple backup thread for single vmdk ?

Re: Read one VM disk with multiple threads
Hello,
and welcome to the forums.
Which backup mode do you use? Veeam introduced the "Advanced Data Fetcher" some years ago which enabled multithreading for HotAdd (VirtualAppliance), Direct NFS and Backup from storage snapshots. We do not use VDDK for these modes.
What is the background of your question? Is your backup too slow?
Thanks,
Hannes

Re: Read one VM disk with multiple threads
Will it be possible for NBD and direct SAN? Hotadd just takes too long to add the disks to the proxy if you have >= 4000 disks to backup per day.

Re: Read one VM disk with multiple threads
we are always looking for performance improvements, but I cannot give any timeline on this specific feature request.
From a performance perspective, the request makes sense, yes.

Re: Read one VM disk with multiple threads
With NBD and latest VMware releases there is a higher queue depth with async. IO as well. So this is potentially helpful for you. This comes from VMware.
As Hannes said we use async. IO operations already since a longer time for HotAdd (VirtualAppliance Veeam backup mode), Direct NFS and Backup from Storage Snapshot.

Re: Read one VM disk with multiple threads
In my environment most of the VMs are more than 6 TB . Each hard disk is 3 TB capactity and utilizing 1 backup thread for 1 Hard disk. Due to this backup window is getting extended.
We have similar virtual backup tool where we are utilizing multiple backup thread for single hard disk.
In general VDDK libraries which available in Vmware will get merged with Veeam software. This API will interact with Vmware for backup operation. When we can expect Veeam will leverage this option to run backup for single hard disk with multiple threads
