remote direct repository

Post by liorme »

hi
in case of a remote storage for backup copy.
when setting up a new repo which is smb based, there is an option to select a gateway server
so if we select a remote gateway server that is "closer" to the storage, the backup merges will take place there.
but when setting up a new repo with direct attach storage, there is no option to select a gateway server.
does this mean that the merges will take place remotely still?

Hello lior

No need for a gateway server for windows or linux repositories. The merge happens directly on those repositories.

The gateway server is required for backup storage where we cannot install binaries directly to on the storage device. E.g. shared folder (SMB, NFS), deduplication appliances (StoreOnce, Data Domain) or object storage. But in case of a windows or linux repository with direct attached disks, we can install our binaries to the machine and use them todo the merge directly on that machine.

Correct. That's why it is strongly recommended for Shared Folder repositories to have a gateway server at the same location and with a good network connection to the share.
