repository hardened

Post by mporliod »

I would like to gather some information regarding the hardened repository with immutability.
My idea is to purchase a server equipped with M.2 disks for the operating system, which will be Red Hat Enterprise Linux. I plan to connect a block storage device via direct-attached fiber.
Is this setup feasible ? Additionally, I intend to use the XFS file system—what is the maximum size the repository partition can reach in this configuration?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I forgot to mention that I would like to perform a backup copy on two Data Domains, enabling the retention lock. Is it mandatory for these to be backup copies with GFS?

Definitely a feasible setup. I have not seen an upper limit to the size people create.

I've created some Hardened Linux repositories of over 100 TB and I've seen people go far larger.

How big are you looking to have?

I was thinking of 96 TB of space, but as a single partition. Do you think it’s possible to connect a server to storage via direct attach fiber and create a repository with Red Hat?

As long as Red Hat can mount that FC lun I don't see why not. After that its just a matter of formatting the lun properly with the correct XFS flags and hardening the OS to make sure its properly secured and hardened.

Quick google search shows its pretty straight forward:

Make sure the repo is large enough to hold your largest VM and growth.

Additionally, if block storage, make sure you have enough Volumes to get full use out of the CPU in the SAN as sometimes each volume will utilize a core so one volume is a waste or resources. If that's the case, span or stripe them in the OS.
