Restore from replica in case of site damage

Post by miyu.masuda »

If Source Site is all damaged in a disaster, Source Site's VBR will not work either.
How can I get the VMs to start at DR site even though I cannot press the failover button on the VBR?

Hello Miyu

For this scenario we recommended to have the backup server in your DR site. Such a backup server can manage all components and jobs from your primary site.

But if you loose your backup server, you will have two options:
1.) Deploy a new backup server in your dr site and restore your configuration backup. Failover will be available from the new backup server

2.) manually start the replica VM. This will break the replication job. You need to create a new replication job to failover the replica VM back to your primary site.

Hello,
Thank you for the reply.

Does this mean that I can see the replication jobs created and executed at the Source site from the VBR at the DR site?

No. With our recommendation, you won‘t have a backup server in your source site. You would have to deploy a single backup server in the DR Site to manage everything.

- backup server in DR site
- proxy server (virtual or physical) in source and DR site
- backup repository in primary site for fast backups and restored
- backup repository in DR site, third site or cloud for a copy of your backups

Everything managed by a single backup server in the DR site.

When replication or CDP (Continuous Data Protection) is in use
When replication or CDP is used among multiple sites, the backup server should be deployed in the DR site to allow failover plans to work seamlessly, even in the case of the complete loss of the primary site. In this case, the scale-out model should be used, so that data traffic for backups stays in the primary datacenter, while only management and replication traffic flows between the two datacenters.
