Restore VDMK from one vm to another?

Post by rdalrymple »

If I restore a virtual disk from one VM to another VM will it retain the windows permissions. My goal is to move one disk drive from a failing VM to another but retain the file permissions because its a file server?

Hello,
Yes, of course. We always take a backup at the block level, VMDK in this case. So, when you restore the virtual disk to another VM, all privileges will be there. It will be down to the OS to understand those privileges; imagine if you took a Backup of a File Server in the Domain, etc. And restore the disk to a new VM that is not in the domain, then the privileges are still there, but the OS can not map them.

I hope it makes sense, in Veeam's eyes, we keep everything.

Thanks
