Restore VM from Veeam backup to VMware workstation

Post by trungmv »

Hello,

I'm using Veeam Backup & Replication free version.

Is it possible to restore VM backup to VMware workstation directly? How to do that?

Any help is very appreciated,

Hello,
VMware workstation is not supported by Veeam B&R.
Thanks!

You could export the files from your backup using the Veeam Extract Utility directly to the folder you’d like to run the vm from. It would be a simple vm registration and basic vm config for networking.

Thank you SLOS. I had a veeam backup file that I needed to import into VMware workstation for testing. Using the GUI version worked great: "C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup\Veeam.Backup.Extractor.exe"

I was able to extract the VMDKs, and then import them into VMWare workstation using the "open virtual machine" button.

Nice suggestion!

Hello,

Just comment that the solution you comment to restore a backup in VMware Workstation works perfectly.

Just add:

Veeam extract files, can be copied from the directory:

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup\
The following files:

Code: Select all

Extract.exe
Veeam.Backup.Extractor.exe
This is enough to extract the backup.

I mention it because on the computer that we want to extract the backup files, it is not necessary that Veeam Backup be installed.

Here I have published a post in Spanish with the step by step, you can use Google translate to translate it into English:

https://www.sysadmit.com/2022/01/veeam- ... ation.html

In the post the backup part is done with a VeeamZIP, but you can use the files from a standard backup.

I hope it helps.

Xavi.
