Restore VM to original location question.

Post by ronald.ducie »

By chance happened to come accross this strange restore behaviour. (VBR 12.0.0.1420 P20230223)
Scenario:
1. Backup of VM1 is done.
2. Then add additional virtual disk to VM1. (Let's say SCSI0:1)
3. Restore VM1 from backup to original location. (Backup was made PRIOR to adding additional virtual disk.)
4. VM1 is restored, but the additional disk is also attached to the vm.
5. In the restore log file you can see SCSI0:1 is also included in the VMX output, although it didn't exist in the VMX file of the original VM1.

A. Is this by design or a bug?
B. If by design, what is the logic behind attaching a disk that was not present when the backup was made?
C. Also, one would assume that when you restore a VM from backup all changes post backup will not be reflected on the restored instance?

Hi Ronald

By design. The user guide states, that with "original location restore" we only restore disks which are included in the backup. The VMX file won't be overwritten with the backed up one and we don't delete or overwrite disks added after the backup was taken. You may delete those disks manually if you don't require them. Maybe a customer still requires some data of those additional disks.

The VMX file from the backup state will only be restored when you restore the VM to a new location.
