Retention policy application for new VM in backup job

Post by ssandoz »

Hi,

Let say I create a new backup job including 1 VM with a Forever Forward Incremental Backup Retention Policy of 10 days, running daily.
In that case on the 10th day, I should have 1 full backup file and 9 incremental backup files.
The days after, I should also keep 1 full backup file and 9 incremental backup files.

Now what will happen if on the 5th day, I add a new VM in the job?
After the 10th day, should I also have 1 full backup file and 9 incremental backup files? Or more incremental backup files will be kept, the time that the 2nd VM reaches the 10 days of retention policy?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Hi Sebastien, you will still have 1 full and 9 incrementals in this case. In case you have the per-VM chains setting enabled on the repository, a separate chain will be created for the second VM. In case per-VM chains are disabled, full backup for the second VM will be written into the corresponding increment. Thanks!
