Seeing Stun issues on Nutanix with Veeam/VM Backups
Hi All
We are just bringing a new Nutanix Block online.
With our testing we are seeing noticeable stun (in some cases up to a minute of VM unavailable) issues with snapshot removals that are done as part of Veeam backups. We have a veeam proxy installed on the nutanix NFS datastore, and are running vsphere6, latest Nutanix OS, etc. and latest version of Veeam 9.5.
I did find a article on Nutanix forums about forcing NDB/network mode to help with this and this did improve thing but not enough to call it resolved. I cannot have my primary SQL server stunned every time we do a backup, so this is a bit of show stopper at this point.
Just looking for ideas at this point?
Jeff

Re: Seeing Stun issues on Nutanix with Veeam/VM Backups
Hi
Most likely, this is a known VMware issue due to the usage of Hot Add transport mode, please check the job log to confirm. To avoid this issue, you need to make sure the proxy is using NFS transport mode. In fact, by default the proxy will prefer NFS over Hot Add as long as it is able to connect to the NFS datastore hosting processed VM disks.
I am not familiar with Nutanix, but I am pretty sure there was a blog on how to set this up a few months ago - you should be able to Google it up!
Thanks!

Jeff,
I believe Anton is talking about this blog: https://msandbu.wordpress.com/2015/11/1 ... x-cluster/
(But even if not, this should be an interesting one for you to read )

Hi Jeff,
I've explained here in details why virtual proxies over NFS may create issues in environments like Nutanix:
http://www.virtualtothecore.com/en/prot ... l-proxies/
As Anton suggested, the best option is to switch to DirectNFS, or at least implement the changes suggested in my post.

gostev in addition to the NFS direct and reg keys for the proxies. Is there anyway Veeam can take advantage of our own VSS hardware requestor and skip the hypervisor based snap all together?

Hi Anton, why this "cold" not!? Nutanix isn't today diffused as much as Veeam required for integration?
Thanks
Thanks

No, it was just the answer to the question - we cannot skip hypervisor based snapshots in any backup mode on any hypervisor today (even when backing up VMware from storage snapshots on the storage we integrate with). Thanks!
