Server 2012 dedupe volume, only for copy jobs?
Hi There,
I have copy jobs configured, and the target is a Windows Server 2012 Dedupe volume, which is fine.
I have 2 volumes that act as targets for my primary backup jobs. I didn't make those volumes Dedupe volumes, as I remember seeing a post on this forum at one point advising against it for some reason.
I'm thinking about changing my 2 x existing primary volumes to dedupe volumes to save space, and to configure the dedupe tasks to run when the backups are not running (obviously).
Is there any real reason why I shouldn't just go ahead and do this?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
One of the cons is slower backup process, since with inline deduplication disabled more data will be transmitted to the target.
But I`d suggest to try it out and see which of the scenarios work better.
Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I have inline deduplication enabled for all of my jobs, but compression disabled for the copy jobs that currently use a dedupe volume as a target.
I got the recommendation from this thread: http://forums.veeam.com/veeam-backup-re ... 2-135.html
All opinions welcome!
Thanks!

Enabling deduplication on primary repository will seriously affect the performance of your restores as well as backup copy jobs, Instant VM Recovery and SureBackup. Our reference architecture recommends using raw and fast primary backup storage, and only use deduplication on secondary backup storage.

Hi Foggy, thanks for that.
Are you referring to inline deduplication, or server 2012 deduplication?

I refer to deduplication at Windows or storage level. Enabling Veeam inline deduplication is typically recommended in any case.
