Size of backup - Autodesk Vault server

Post by Arpo »

An Autodesk Vault server is one of the VMware servers being backed up by Veeam 9.5.

The Vault server runs it's own nightly backup, about 120GB. It moves the previous night's backup from folder, 'Backup_A' into, 'Backup_B' then puts the new nightly backup into folder, 'Backup_A'.

The actual change in data between daily backups is not that great. Why then does Veeam seem to backup the whole folder, rather than simply what's changed? I thought Veeam operated at the block level, not the filename/file level.

Hi and welcome to the community,

Even if the actual difference between those two backup files is not that significant, by moving a 120Gb file from A to B you generate the amount of changes worth 120GB. When you add a new 120GB file into A, you therefore generate another 120GB of changes. That happens because the same pieces of data are not guaranteed to be placed on the very same blocks on the filesystem.

Thanks

Thanks PTide. Not good, because every daily backup grows by at least 120GB, plus the weekly/monthly etc.

May I ask you why do you need to run Vault native backup and backup the entire VM afterwards instead of running the entire VM backup only?

Thanks

If possible is good to keep a native Autodesk Data Management Console backup because Autodesk will not support any issue from a restored VM via Veeam
