Slow Incremental Job
Is there any way to speed up the this incremental job to an ISCSi synology SAN?
All other jobs seem reasonable but this one is the only Incremental job others are reverse incremental.
Attached are the current Settings
Incremental
Enable synthetic fulls checked
Transform previous fulls
Compression level Optimal
Optimized to local target
1VM
total size 3.5tb
data read 3.5tb
transferred: 3.8gb (average but speed doesn't change even when it's 100mb of transfer)
dedupe 1x
compression 1.4x
read speed roughly 100mb/s
transfer speed roughly 6kb/s to 1GB/s (probably when it's transferring it's on the higher end)
takes 7:35 to complete an increment

Re: Slow Incremental Job
Jonathan, what bottleneck stats does this job show? What was the performance of its full run, comparing to other jobs? What days the synthetic full is scheduled at?
Also, these lines:
Also, these lines:
make me think that CBT is not used for this job and the entire VM image is read each time. Can you confirm this by looking in the job session log - is there a [CBT] tag next to the VM hard disks processing records? Are there any CBT errors/warnings logged there? What kind of VM is it?JohnnyK wrote:total size 3.5tb

Re: Slow Incremental Job
The provided information certainly indicates that CBT hasn't been used for some reason. Is this machine used as a proxy server by any chance? Thanks.

Re: Slow Incremental Job
Thanks for the reply, it would seem CBT is checked under Storage -->Advanced-->VSphere under change block tracking both use change block tracking data and Enable CBT for all protected VM's automatically are checked

Re: Slow Incremental Job
Is this machine used as a Veeam B&R proxy server? Could you also post a screenshot of the same job session log window, but with MassSpecFS VM selected in the list to the left.

Re: Slow Incremental Job
That is the reason, CBT is disabled for hotadd proxies. You can either use another proxy to backup this very VM via hotadd or, in case it is not used as hotadd proxy to backup any other VMs, enable CBT manually on it and it will backup itself via network mode using CBT.JohnnyK wrote:Yes it's a proxy

Re: Slow Incremental Job
Ok thanks that makes sense now..It's available to other backup jobs for hotadd so I'll take option 1 and statically assign another proxy to this job and see how it goes and let you know.

Re: Slow Incremental Job
Be aware that if you keep this VM as hot add proxy and backup this VM with other Hot-Add proxy, the CBT still won't be used. Because, each time the backup job takes place, using the VM in question as a proxy, the CBT on this machine will be disabled.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Slow Incremental Job
I changed the job to use a the VMware Backup proxy and not itself and I get the same performance

Re: Slow Incremental Job
Does VMware Backup proxy use hotadd to backup the second proxy VM?

Re: Slow Incremental Job
Ok so if I understood you correctly I should remove Masspecfs as a proxy completely even if it's being used by other backup jobs? With that logic in place the rule should be that you should never use any VM you are backing up with Veeam as a Proxy because CBT will always be disabled when backing that VM up.
So should I build a physical machine as a Proxy or use a VM I am never backing up.. it's just quite confusing

Re: Slow Incremental Job
Well, what I mean is that using another proxy to backup your first proxy you are able to use hotadd mode (since the first proxy cannot hotadd itself and fails over to network mode). Using hotadd mode could give you some performance improvement, however CBT still cannot be enabled, while the first proxy is being used to hotadd other VMs. With hotadd proxies you have to bear with the fact that you cannot back them up using CBT.JohnnyK wrote:Ok so if I understood you correctly I should remove Masspecfs as a proxy completely even if it's being used by other backup jobs?

Re: Slow Incremental Job
I deleted Massepcfs as a proxy and added another low use server as a hot add proxy. Hopefully Masspecfs will pickup the new proxy and keep CBT on this time.
