Surebackup from central VBR to remote locations

Post by bmazz »

We have 10 international sites all routable from our LAN. Each location has its own Mount Server/Proxy server vm and physical hosts. Each site has NAS' as destination for daily backups.

I created 1 vLab per location, thinking it would keep everything local, however, from what I understand, when it comes to disabling the Windows firewall, the vbr server mounts the disks of the machines and edits the registry back on its server rather than using the mount server of that location. In theory, our VBR server is having to reach the NAS' to pull those files back which is causing this process to take hours.

Is this expected? How do other people do this process managing backup from a central location whilst having the backup files locally?

I learned something new today that we can disable the firewall in SureBackup.

SureBackup starts VMs and reaches from VBR server into the Lab by the Masquerade Subnet. As well the Virtual Lab Appliance is configured to act as default route / Gateway for your subnets within the Virtual Lab.

In case of disabling the firewall. This is a configurable setting and you can disable it.

Potentially you need to ensure then that your Windows Firewall allows the needed communication from the Veeam infrastructure in order to do PING tests and other selected tests, to ensure that SureBackup jobs would run successfully. https://www.veeam.com/kb1067 Yes, this the firewall disable process is done by the Veeam Backup server. I will ask the team to add a feature request for executing this on the mount server, but it will take a while until this is picked up.

In order that network communication can be established to the virutal labs from a Backup server not in the same subnet as the virtual lab appliance, you need to add some static routes to your Routers. https://www.veeam.com/kb1067
