SureBackup using an imported backup file
Hello !
I need to prepare a SureBackup job, using a VM backup that was staged to tape.
The backup file has been restored and is imported in the VBR console.
When I try to add this VM in an Application Group, I cannot select it.
I have also noticed that all VMs related to a Backup Copy job are also unavailable.
Is this a mistake from my side or a limitation of the SureBackup feature ?
Thanks for help !

Re: SureBackup using an imported backup file
This is a limitation of the SureBackup. The idea is that you test it before it goes to secondary (copy) storage like tape, and then only use the Health Check to verify that the data is correctly written to the secondary media and no bit errors happened. The idea is it is really costly and unpractical to do this from storages like tape in an automated way.
Can you please share why you want to do this, maybe I have a workaround for the specific situation.

Re: SureBackup using an imported backup file
Hello Andreas,
Thank you for the information.
I understand that it is not possible to automate the process from a special storage like tape.
My need is to provide a Lab, an OnDemand Sandbox, based on this specific version of the VM.
I already have restored the archived version from tape to a disk repo.
Now, I want to start this specific version in parallel of the production VM, without interference...
It will be a kind of manual Datalab

Re: SureBackup using an imported backup file
So I guess you still have the original VM.
Maybe the following work.
Import the backup or look that it is under Home-Backup-Disk(Imported).
Create a Job with the actual VM without schedule and "map existing backups".
This maybe will move the backup out of imported and therefore you can then create with this job a SureBackup Job (Application Group).

Re: SureBackup using an imported backup file
You are right, the original VM is still alive.
Great idea to try to remap the backup file.
The backup is available under Home-Backup-Disk(Imported).
When I try the mapping in the new job, unfortunately the backup file is not listed.
Gives it another way to try this map ?

Re: SureBackup using an imported backup file
Hello,
I have finally found another way to use my tape recovered VM in a DataLab.
First of all, I start a SureBackup job with a reduced Application Group. Job is configured with the "Keep application group running" option.
Next I start an Instant Recovery of the tape recovered backup, that I keep off.
This way, Veeam presents the VM to my ESXi host. Then I can customize the Network configuration of this VM and start it manually.
Now I have my DataLab with the needed version of the VM.
Hope that can help.
Kind regards !
