Synthetic backup vs. Full forever backup. Slow speed.

Post by bgalante »

Hi!

How do I increase the processing speed on a Synthetic Backup or a forever full backup(Merge)?

I'm backing up to a NAS share. I'm not sure where to insert the processing power.

The processing is slow to create the synthetic full, or "merge".

Brian, how your NAS box is added to Veeam B&R console? As a CIFS type repository? What is the connection between the Veeam B&R server and NAS then? If everything is on LAN, then the issue is in random I/O NAS is capable of.

In this case, haven't you thought about switching from periodic synthetic full backups to periodic full backups? Thank.

Thank you for the reply!

The NAS share is just a network NAS box, it's not a server with a share. Its a Synology NAS to be exact. And yes it is a CIFS repository in Veam B&R Console.

I am trying different methods, including the weekly active full as opposed to the synthetic full. That is a bit slow as well due to me only having a 1GB pipe.

I was wondering if I added more CPU power to the proxies if it would help with the speed.

What are the bottleneck stats for the active full job? How do you tell it is slow? What is the processing rate reported by the job?

Also, what kind of NAS do you have (number of spindles, RAID type, what kind of disks are used)?
