Test Migrate VM from Hyper-V to ESX - which option?

Post by NorthGuard »

I want to eventually migrate a VM from Hyper-V to ESX, but want to perform the process initially as a throw away to test it all.

I have selected Instant Recovery on the VM, pointing it to my ESX server and it is now ready and waiting. I am not sure which next step is the most appropriate though:

Instant recovery - Migrate to Production VS Inventory > Quick Migration

I can right-click the VM under instant Recovery and choose Migrate to Production OR I can go into Inventory, drill down to the VM that is running under Instant Recovery mode, and select Quick Migration.

What are the differences and which is the proper route to take?

Hello,

Technically, there is no difference between these two options as "Migrate to production" launches the same Quick Migration wizard. I would use "Migrate to production" as it exists there especially to finalize Instant Recovery session.

Thanks!

That doesn't do anything to the "real" production version of the VM, correct?

Also... Thanks!

You're welcome! Only the restored VM will be migrated and the production one remains intact.

Thanks!
