Time to truncate?

Post by millardjk »

Simple question: should I be investigating further if the (nightly incremental) backup of a SQL server (with 15min log backups) takes 1:30 and Veeam spends 1:18 of it at the "Truncating transaction logs" stage?

Hi,

I suggest you to open a case with our support team because it's hard to tell what's happening without logs investigation. The thing is that no SQL log truncation should occur during incremental run - all log operations have to be handled by a separate sub-job that runs (according to your settings) every 15 minutes.

Please don't forget to post your case ID in this topic.

Thank you.

Appears that "competition" between native backup/maintenance jobs and Veeam were the root cause. Removing the Veeam SQL truncation task (the DBA was pretty adamant about keeping the native tasks) cleaned up the issue.

And even after explicitly disabling log truncation in the guest interaction portion of the backup config, I'm still getting a) RPC timeout errors, b) long "log truncation" events, etc. This is driving me nuts.

Jim, I can see your case is already closed, haven't you thought of re-opening it for further deeper investigation?
