Veeam Backup - VRB w/Backup Copy Job ViB: Timing?
We would appreciate the forum’s opinion on the option/way to improve how we work with the backup and backup copy job timing in our configurations.
- Will the backup copy job schedule (see below) help or hinder our backup workflow?
A Veeam backup job (reverse incremental) with seven restore points runs daily at 6:00 PM. This job performs an active full each Friday.
- A secondary destination is selected in this backup job configuration. The secondary destination is our backup copy job.
The active full backup job takes about 20 hours to complete. It starts at 6:00 PM on Friday and completes Saturday afternoon ~4:30 PM.
- Subsequent reverse incremental backup jobs are complete in about an hour.
Active full job details are shown below:
(Total size 5.6 TB) (Backup size 2.1 TB)
(Data read 2.8 TB) (Dedupe 2.2x)
(Transferred 2.1 TB) (Compression 1.2x)
An incremental backup copy job is configured to run every (1) day / continuously at 12:30 AM. The backup copy job maintains two restore points.
When the Friday full backup job is running the backup copy job scheduled to begin Saturday at 12:30 AM – fails to run. We get a notification: “Some VMs were not processed during the copy interval”.
- Saturday’s 12:30 AM backup copy job doesn’t/cannot run on schedule as the Friday active full backup job runs until completion between ~4:30 and 8:30 PM Saturday.
When the full backup job completes, the backup copy job starts. The backup copy job will take a few hours to complete.
The job timing can conflict with Saturday’s scheduled full backup job, which will begin as scheduled at 6:00 PM.
- I do not recall if this overlapping run (full and copy jobs) is allowed by Veeam to occur.
To avoid offending full and copy job schedule overlap - we intend to use the backup copy job’s schedule configuration to deny its run from Friday 8:00 PM through all of Saturday.
Thanks,

Re: Veeam Backup - VRB w/Backup Copy Job ViB: Timing?
Hello Wad4iPod
Backup Jobs have always a higher priority than the backup copy job.
If you want to have a copy of all restore points, you must configure an immediate backup copy job.
May I ask, what version of Veeam Backup & Replication do you have installed?
Best,
Fabian

Yes, they can both be started at the same time. A periodic copy job will only copy the newest restore point available.- I do not recall if this overlapping run (full and copy jobs) is allowed by Veeam to occur.

Welcome to version 12... The performance is about 20% of what it was with ESXI environments...

Re: Veeam Backup - VRB w/Backup Copy Job ViB: Timing?
Hello All.
To add:
Our full backup is linked to our backup copy job (secondary destination).
Veeam outlines the outcome of the 'linked copy job' as follows:
As soon as a backup job session is finished and a new restore point appears in the source backup repository, the backup copy job automatically copies this restore point to the target backup repository.
(https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120)
If the desired outcome is for our backup copy job, be current along with the backup job -
Do we need the 'continuous daily (default) copy interval' with the secondary destination option configured?
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
Does anyone know how the backup copy interval and the 'secondary destination' (being the backup copy job) workflow play together?
Thanks in advance.
