Traffic Throttling with Wan Accelerators

Post by nicolas.gras »

Hi,

It seem that Traffic Throttling is not applied with Backup Copy jobs used Wan Accelerators. Is this true?
If yes, how it is possible to limit bandwidth use during working hours (with Wan Accelerators) ?

Thank's for advance,

Regards,

Hi, Nicolas. As long as you properly set rules up between source and target, the traffic should be throttled. However, there is a known issue with throttling rules not working properly in case “Use multiple upload streams per job” is unticked. So, kindly check this first. Thanks.

Hi Vladimir,

Thank's for your answer.
I test with and without this option and It seem that Traffic Throttling is not applied.

Then, I’m wondering between what particular components you’ve set throttling rules. Thanks.

Vladimir,

This may be a architecture problem ?

In the Veeam source site, i have configured :
-A local 'Wan Accelerator'
-A remote 'Wan Accelerator'
-A remote 'Microsoft Windows' 'Managed Server' (same server as 'Wan Accelerator')
-No Remote backup Proxy (it is the problem ?)
-A remote Backup repository, defined with 'SharedFolder' type. In 'Share', i have defined my remote 'Microsoft Windows Managed Server' in 'proxying server'

In the backup Copy job, I defined my remote Backup repository as target and of course the two Wan Accelerator.

Is that this is correct?

Thank's,

Everything seems to be ok with this deployment. Though, it might be more interesting to hear between IP addresses of what components you set throttling rules. Thanks.

In 'Target IP address range', i have Remote Network Range

Thank's

Nicolas, since it looks like you have configured everything properly and traffic between WAN accelerators should be throttled, I recommend contacting support so that they could investigate this further. Thanks.

Don't we still need to perform throttling both ways?

For instance:
Source ----------------------------Destination -------------------Throttling -----Time period
10.99.1.1-10.99.15.255 -----> 10.100.1.1-10.100.15.255 - 25mbps --------- Anytime
10.100.1.1-10.100.15.255 --> 10.99.1.1-10.99.15.255 ---- 25mbps --------- Anytime

Throttling rules are reversible, they function in two directions, so there is no need to specify this rule twice.

[MERGED] Traffic Throttling

Should Traffic throttling apply to backup copy jobs?
I find that when we run them direct (no WAN accelerator) we max out a link even though the throttle is set at 25Mbps - couple of screens below.

Alain, please ensure you have the "Use multiple upload streams per job" check box selected and verify the addresses the rules are configured between.

Yes, this is checked. I've checked the rules and they look ok - I've also added rules from Remote -> Local site in case this is needed. Previously the rules would have only affected Local -> Remote traffic only I'd imagine?

Hi, Alain.

Throttling rules are still supposed to work in both directions. So, it’s not required to set them two times.

Anyway, if you’ve set everything properly and proposed workaround that includes enabling multithreading didn’t work for you, I’d recommend opening a ticket with our support team and letting them investigate it directly.

Thanks.

Matt, there's no case ID in this thread to confirm whether some kind of issue indeed took place or this was just a matter of throttling rules misconfiguration. If you are certain you have the "Use multiple upload streams per job" check box selected and have specified correct addresses the rules are configured between, the next step would be to contact technical support to verify your configuration and review the log files, if required.

I looking to setup something similar to this. I want to setup a backup copy job to a remote site, using WAN Accelerators. For the IP address ranges in the throttling rule, do I just need to include the IP addresses of the WAN accelerators or does it need to include Proxies/VM's in the backup/.... I'm not sure what to include.

Thanks.

Hi Keith, WAN Accelerators IP's are enough.
