Transform - workload

Post by Berniebgf »

Hi all,

When a transform is being performed for a Incremental Job with Transform set, is the IO workload only for the previous full that is being transformed into a VRB? or is there additional IO workload for each of the VIB's to be converted. (Or is it as simple as a rename....VIB to VRB?).

Reason for asking........Performance impact expected on VERY long Incremental Job retention period with transform set.

thanks

Bernard.

Hi, Bernard.

No, it’s not about just renaming files. Synthetic backup with transformation option affects latest full backup that is synthetically merged with the increments, as well as, increments that are converted to .vrb format. As to IOPS, synthetic full for incremental backup mode with transform option puts 4 x IOPs on target (read + write + read + write for each block).

Therefore, it might be quite a time consuming process on long incremental chain. Thanks.

This is exactly why we require doing synthetic full weekly, and don't provide the ability to schedule them more rarely.

Thanks for the feedback,

Can I also assume that for each weekly transformation the pre-existing VRB remain untouched?

thanks

Yep, already existed reversed incrementals will not be touched by transformation activity. Thanks.
